DOJ claims Va. Beach Police Department discriminated against minorities

According to an A.P. story released today, the Justice Department called blacks and hispanics stupid because a higher percentage did not pass a mathematics exam as part of the National Police Officer Test than did white test takers. Now, my question to you is, what type of math is on this exam for minorities not to pass?

Having briefly been part of law enforcement whilst being employed in the Navy, I don't recall any math. Numbers, yes, math, no. DUI numbers, 10 codes, and the ability to read a clock, but not once do I recall sitting down and solving any theorems. What difficult math does a cop need? Basic subtraction, actual vehicle speed minus speed limit. How many bullets left in my gun? Basic addition, how many bad guys do I see? Basic multiplication, three cops, two full clips of nine or thirteen, how many holes in the dead guy? Basic division, how many donuts do I get if I split them with my partner?

85% of white applicants, 66% of hispanic applicants passed, and 59% of black applicants passed this timed portion of the test, which only requires 70% correct to pass. C'mon, guys, just take "C". This is just another attempt by the government to attach quotas to a profession that requires a fair amount of intelligence to undertake. Would you like to have an idiot with a badge toting a gun around your neighborhood, no matter what colour he/she is, under the guise of fairness to morons? We have enough stupid cops in our country as is, without the government stepping in to kill us with kindness.

If the Justice Department wants to investigate anyone for minorities not being able to count higher than the number of their phalanges, they should investigate parent(s). I can almost guarantee the math on the cop test is a hair easier than that of the PSAT, SAT, or the ACT.

Or blame the teachers?
on Feb 10, 2006
I blame the teachers, but not to the extent that I blame the parents. I think the education complex is more to blame than teachers, and that includes the government and the President's "no child left behind" policy. Too much emphasis is being placed on teaching to the standardized tests than to teaching. Unfortunately for parents, in this day and age, they still have to assume responsibility for their brood, a burden that it may be.

LW, we may insist on equal results, but the politicians we continue to vote in don't. The values they instill in their occupations are still thirty to forty years behind where the rest of the country is. Affirmative action is as archaic as Strom Thurman used to be, or as Robert Byrd is. I'm not sure where the disconnect happens when a person becomes a member of the Congress, but I have a feeling that it must have always been existant.

I know where you're going with the black idiots and guns thing, have you been watching the bro's here in Richmond getting indicted for annihilating two families around New Years. I'm just far enough away from Richmond that it doesn't happen near me, but it's getting closer. I fear you may be right about the dumbing down of the tests, after alll, the government is very good about that sort of thing.
